This book is very helpful and full of information. It also encourages you to got on an adventure of trying something new and exciting! Great buy for wine lovers or for someone who is just starting to show interest in wines.
I have a paperback copy of this book and I always carry it with me. A great resource to have on hand at all times. I am truly loving my kindle edition - easier to carry!
This is my go-to book for wine education. It is basically a dictionary, and gives concise information about exactly what you're curious about. If you have a specific question, or run across a topic that you want to understand better, this is the perfect way to access the information.
This is a great e-book if you like reading encyclopedias cover to cover. If you prefer to look up specific words, names, or topics, then you will be quite disappointed in the version of this book. Don't get me wrong; this is an incredible book in its book form, but it is severely lacking as an e-book.
Why?
It is too time consuming to find what you're looking for.
This e-book needs an index that is linked to the content of the book. For example, you should be able to go to the index quickly and click on, let's say, the name CHARDONNAY. Then it should switch to the page that describes Chardonnay.
Without an index, the e-book should at least be searchable. For example, you should be able to open the reader's menu, click on Search, type in the name CHARDONNAY, and it should display short samples of text containing the name Chardonnay. As it is, you cannot search this e-book. When you try, you get this message, "Title not yet indexed".
I converted this book from .mobi to .azw3 with Calibre software and then uploaded the new file to my . Now it is searchable, but it's still a pain because common words, names, and topics are scattered throughout the book, so you get so many results that it takes a while to find what you're looking for.
On the bright side, this e-book is cross referenced with links to the main words/names/topics. So, if you look up "zibibbo", you can click on the cross-reference to "Muscat" to read more about that name.
I have found a way to speed up searches just a little. Go to the menu and click on "Go To" and then click on "Page or Location". Estimate the location of the word you're looking for. It is somewhere between pages 1 and 590. For example, I would guess that Chardonnay is near page 50. No, page 50 contains B-words. So I try page 90. OK, I'm in the C-words now, so let's try page 120. Oops, I've gone too far. Let's go back to 115. That's close. Go back a few pages and, voila, I found Chardonnay.
Or, an easier solution is to go buy the book and delete the version until the publisher makes this e-book easier to use.
(Note to Publisher, Authors, or Please update this great book so we don't have to spend so much time looking up a single word. Until then, I can only give it 2.5 stars. That's 5 stars for the content of the book and zero stars for the e-book functionality.)

Here's the book you must have if you want the answers to those questions that frequently come up about nearly everything associated with wine. The author, Ron Herbst, has done a magnificent job with this book. The reader will find new insights on wine that will be very helpful. I highly recommend it to anyone who is interested in wine.

I now have one at home in Hawaii and one here in Sonoma Valley. My well-thumbed Wine Lover's Companion has been my go-to wine reference for many years, especially on pronunciation. It's comforting to know you're saying it right. I've not yet been able to explore the additions in this newer version. I'm sure they add value.
